How to pre-wash a lot of fabric?
I have this problem: I need to pre-wash 6 yards of thick fabric. Together. It won't fit into the washing machine, I will use a bath tub.
But how should I hang it to dry? Any tips, ideas and such how to hang such a long piece of fabric?
I'm afraid that it may be wiser not to pre-wash, make the skirt a little longer and wash afterward, once it's rid of scraps and holds into some shape.
What is your experience with this?
Back before I had a workshop and a big washing machine I took long lengths of fabric to a commercial laundry or a laundromat with super large machines. It is always best to pre-treat and clean the fabric the same way it will be cleaned once it is made up.
The problem with not pre-washing is that you have no way to determine shrinkage or stretch. it might shrink in width but stretch in length, or it might shrink more one way than another. You might be wise to cut out a four inch square of fabric along the selvage so you know which way the weave is going, wash that and then re-measure to see exactly where shrinkage has occurred. If the end square is 3 and 15/16ths then there no need to pre-wash, but if the square is now 3 and half by three and a half or worse, a rectangle then a good washing is essential. You can make your decision after you see how the fabric behaves after washing.
