Question about convertible car seat.?
I'm looking to get a Sunshine Kids Radian 80, or the Britax Regent. If anyone has had any experience with either of these seats please let me know. The reason I want one of these seats is, because they can hold your child in a five point harness until 80 pounds.. I also know already that the government has to approve these seats.
Good for you for trying to keep your child harnessed as long as possible!!! Too many parents just stick their 3-4 year olds (or younger, eek) in booster seats. Not safe. We have a Britax Regent, and I love it. My son is only 3, but he's huge - always been in the 95th% , 41lbs, 40inches and he just turned 3. He has oodles of room left to grow in the Regent. It has 20" top harness slots, and does harness to 80lbs. One important thing, though, the Regent is NOT a convertible car seat. It is forward facing only, from 22-80lbs. , and you must use a top tether with children 50lbs and up. In comparison, most seats at Walmart have 14-15" top slots and only harness to 40lbs. The top slot height is the most important thing, too, as most kids outgrow their seat by height before they outgrow it by weight. My son outgrew his 40lbs car seat at 30lbs, outgrew his 65lbs car seat at 41lbs. b/c he is quite tall. The Regent is a BIG seat - well, it has to be to hold up to an 80lbs kid! But it easily fits into small cars, too.
Sunshine Kids Radian65/80 are great seats, but they have some serious installation issues. Wouldn't work in my car b/c I have forward of the bight seatbelts. Meaning, the buckle part of my belt (female end) does not come out of the crack between seat back and seat bottome, it comes out of the middle of the seat bottom. The Radian wouldn't work at all. Also, the Radian is so narrow, that my son already looked a little uncomfortable in it. Its narrowness can be a bonus, though, if you need to get 3 car seats in one row, but not for a large kid. Also, the top harness slot on the Radian is 19", shorter than the Regent. And I wouldn't pay extra money for the Radian80 - it is the SAME seat as the Radian65, just tested to 80lbs. This means it has the same harness positions as the Radian65. The only way a child will make it to 80lbs in this seat is if he is very short and quite rotund.
The Radian65 harnesses to 65lbs, and lots of kids will make it to 65lbs in the seat, which would be between 6-8 years old depending upon the child. In contrast, the Regent fits most kids till 8-10 years old. The Radians are convertible seats, however, and can be used rear facing up to 33lbs. Radian is slightly cheaper than a Regent.
